Bachelor's Degrees

Biomedical Engineering

The Biomedical Engineering program at Southern Illinois University provides the best opportunities for students to work closely with our dedicated faculty and advance their careers. We offer a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering and a PreMedical Specialization. We also offer a Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering.

Civil Engineering

The undergraduate civil engineering program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET (www.abet.org). Students can choose from four areas of study: environmental, geotechnical, hydraulics/water resources, and structural engineering.

Civil Engineering with Specialization in Environmental Engineering

The Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET (www.abet.org). Students can pursue a specialization in Environmental Engineering by taking technical electives from an approved list of courses.

Computer Engineering

The undergraduate program in computer engineering emphasizes problem-solving and design techniques through the thorough understanding of the fundamentals of both computer hardware and software and is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET (www.abet.org). Program strengths include the high quality of instruction, the personal attention of the faculty to each student and the training of our students in the use of sophisticated software used by industry.

Computer Science

The Computer Science program offers two-degree programs to undergraduate students - the Bachelor of Science and the Bachelor of Arts. The Bachelor of Arts degree program is more specifically oriented toward the interdisciplinary aspect of computer science in which  students select a secondary concentration such as business, engineering, science, education, liberal arts, or mass communication.  Pre-med, pre-law, or a minor in any of the above areas may fully or partially satisfy this requirement depending on credit hours.  One possible secondary concentration in the area of business applications is designed to enable students to pursue a fifth year of studies leading to an MBA degree.

Cybersecurity Technology

A B.S. degree in the popular field of Cybersecurity Technology is offered by the School of Computing (offered both on-campus and on-line). Demand for cybersecurity jobs continues to grow and cybersecurity careers can be dynamic and exciting. Between emerging threats and new technological innovations, the field of cybersecurity is constantly changing, and the Cybersecurity Technology (CTEC) program will prepare students to take advantage of a variety of cybersecurity career opportunities. CTEC is a baccalaureate degree major that draws from the fields of computing, information technology, information assurance, and information security. Based on widely accepted cybersecurity curricular guides, the CTEC program provides students with the theoretical and conceptual knowledge essential to understanding the cybersecurity discipline as well opportunities to develop practical skills. Graduates enter the workforce as cybersecurity professionals ready to make a difference applying advanced skills to protect critical digital infrastructures and services.

Electrical Engineering

Our undergraduate program has a strong tradition of excellence and success and is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET (www.abet.org). Laboratory training and design experience are strongly emphasized throughout the program, which translates into strong demand for our graduates from industries throughout the nation. The program has a strong emphasis on laboratory training and almost all courses include a laboratory component.

Electrical Engineering with specialization in Biomedical Engineering or Power and Energy Engineering

The electrical engineering program leading to the Bachelor of Science degree is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET (www.abet.org). Students pursue coursework in electrical engineering and may focus their studies in either Biomedical Engineering or Power and Energy Engineering.

Electrical Engineering Technology

The Electrical Engineering Technology program (offered both on-campus and on-line) is accredited by the Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission of ABET (www.abet.org). The Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology degree provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to pursue a wide variety of career options. Students receive training in the high-demand technical fields of computer systems, microelectronics, communications systems and electric power distribution.

Industrial Management and Applied Engineering

The Industrial Management and Applied Engineering program (offered on-campus, off-campus on military and community college locations, and on-line) is accredited by the Association of Technology, Management and Applied Engineering ATMAE (atmae.org). Students who pursue a degree in Industrial Management and Applied Engineering choose between an on-campus, traditional program; an off-campus program; and a laborer union program. Students are trained in six sigma, lean manufacturing, quality control, computer-aided manufacturing, industrial robotics, manufacturing processes, industrial safety, facilities planning, cost estimating and personnel supervision.

Information Technology

Information Technology (ITEC) is a baccalaureate degree major (offered both on-campus and on-line) designed to prepare students for careers in a wide variety of work settings that rely on information technologies to accomplish organizational goals. ITEC is a great fit for students who enjoy using computing technology to provide solutions to issues facing individuals, organizations, and societies. ITEC is distinct from computer engineering, computer science, and management information systems because it focuses on meeting the needs of users within organizational and societal contexts through the selection, creation, application, integration, and administration of computing technologies.

Mathematics

The School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences offers the following undergraduate degrees in mathematics:

  1. B.S. in Mathematics,
  2. B.S. in Mathematics with specialization in Data Science,
  3. B.S. in Mathematics with specialization in Actuarial Mathematics,
  4. B.S. in Mathematics Education.

Mechanical Engineering

With more than 250 undergraduate students, the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Energy Processes is the largest department in the College of Engineering. The BS in Mechanical Engineering is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET (www.abet.org).

Mechanical Engineering with specialization in Energy Engineering

Mechanical engineering is a diverse engineering field, focused on studying mechanical systems, thermal and fluid systems, and advanced materials. The BS in Mechanical Engineering is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET (www.abet.org).

Statistics

The School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences offers a B.S.  degree in Statistics. Statisticians make meaning from data using a combination of mathematics and design thinking.  Statistics are much needed in a wide variety of practical applications such as business analytics, industrial control, marketing, public policy, epidemiology, public health, demography,  psychology, sociology, to mention only a few. Studies from several independent sources identify statistics as a critical area in which demand for skilled knowledge workers is expanding dramatically and quickly.

Technical Resource Management

The Technical Resource Management program is available in two convenient formats: online and on-campus. The program is designed to provide students with the 21st Century knowledge and skill sets to meet the in-demand employment needs of the American workforce. It builds upon your educational and occupational experiences with courses selected to meet technical career objectives. The coursework is designed to develop foundational knowledge and insights to leading personnel in areas like quality control, labor-management relations, finance, business law, statistical analysis, and project management.
