A niche all of its own - Tim Crosby
Embedded systems, environments that use embedded microprocessors to control systems and provide feedback in real time, are everywhere. And they have a special place at Southern Illinois University’s College of Engineering. SIU is home to the Center for Embedded Systems, a national consortium of electronics research funded by the National Science Foundation. The center is a joint effort among SIU’s College of Engineering, the Fulton School of Engineering at Arizona State University and private industry, said Spyros Tragoudas, professor and chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and leader of the effort at SIU.

It’s not a stretch to say Dan Korte is one of the movers and shakers in defense engineering. As a veteran of more than 20 years at major players such as Rolls-Royce Defense and Boeing, Korte has played a major role in steering major projects through design and manufacturing, accounting for billions of dollars in defense spending along the way.

Back on Saluki soil - Tim Crosby
Andrew Gaines is becoming a familiar face around the College of Engineering. Gaines, a 2007 graduate of the SIU School of Journalism, returned to his alma mater to take over the position of chief development officer last fall. The position is responsible for helping to meet college funding goals through donations and other efforts.

Lincoln student Laureate - Tim Crosby
The College of Engineering at Southern Illinois University has an outstanding student representative in Eileen N. Schweiss, a recently named Lincoln Academy of Illinois student laureate. Schweiss, a mechanical engineering major, also was a member and captain of the SIU cross-country and track teams. She was honored during a Nov. 4 ceremony in Springfield.

NASA Moonbuggy racers - Tim Crosby
CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Engineering students at Southern Illinois University Carbondale finished in two of the three top spots at NASA’s annual Human Exploration Rover Challenge last week in Huntsville, Ala.
