Chowdhury Receives Research Grant
Dr. Farhan Chowdhury will be receiving a $442,500 research grant from the NIH
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) will be funding a research grant at SIUC Mechanical Engineering. Dr. Farhan Chowdhury, an Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering, will be receiving an NIH AREA R15 grant for conducting research on stem cell self-renewal and differentiation. Stem cells (see figure) are the source of regeneration in our bodies. How to engineer and direct stem cells into functional body cells in a laboratory setting remains a big question. Using state-of-the-art cell mechanics and mechanobiology approaches, the team will focus on generating functional body cells that can be used for regenerative/ tissue engineering purposes in the future. The grant will involve both graduate and undergraduate students. AREA R15 grant is a 3-year grant which is renewable through a competitive process.
