Dr. Hirschi joined SIU's MMRE department after 13 years as a project manager with the Illinois Clean Coal Institute where he supervised research on mine and power plant optimization; mining methods; coal processing; and miner health, safety, and training. Prior to that, he spent 15 years working at a southern Illinois coal mine in various engineering and supervisory roles including mine safety, materials handling and conveyor systems, and coal preparation. He has been certified by the State of Illinois as a First Class Miner, Mine Examiner, Mine Manager, and Shot Firer. He holds B.S. and M.S. degrees in Mining Engineering and a M.B.A. degree from the University of Utah, and a Ph.D. in Engineering Science from Southern Illinois University Carbondale.
