Biomedical Engineering with Pre-Medical specialization

The Pre-Medical Specialization within the Biomedical Engineering program is tailored for students with a strong ambition to pursue a medical degree after graduation.

Civil Engineering

Students in this ABET accredited program are prepared through rigorous coursework and hands-on learning experiences for diverse roles in the civil engineering field (environmental, geotechnical, hydraulics/water resources, structural engineering).

Civil Engineering with Specialization in Environmental Engineering

Students in the Civil Engineering program can pursue a specialization in Environmental Engineering by taking technical electives from an approved list of courses.

Computer Engineering

This ABET accredited program in computer engineering emphasizes problem-solving and design techniques through the thorough understanding of the fundamentals of both computer hardware and software. Program strengths include the high quality of instruction, the personal attention of the faculty to each student and the training of our students in the use of sophisticated software used by industry.

Computer Engineering with Specialization in Cyber Systems and Security Engineering

Students in the Computer Engineering program can pursue a specialization in Cyber Systems and Security Engineering by taking technical electives from an approved list of courses.

Computer Science

The Computer Science program offers two-degree programs to undergraduate students: the Bachelor of Science and the Bachelor of Arts. The Bachelor of Arts degree program is more specifically oriented toward the interdisciplinary aspect of computer science in which students select a secondary concentration such as business, engineering, science, education, liberal arts, or mass communication.  Pre-med, pre-law, or a minor in any of the above areas may fully or partially satisfy this requirement depending on credit hours.  One possible secondary concentration in the area of business applications is designed to enable students to pursue a fifth year of studies leading to an MBA degree.

Cybersecurity Technology

A B.S. degree in the popular field of Cybersecurity Technology is offered by the School of Computing (offered both on-campus and on-line). Demand for cybersecurity jobs continues to grow and cybersecurity careers can be dynamic and exciting. Between emerging threats and new technological innovations, the field of cybersecurity is constantly changing, and the Cybersecurity Technology (CTEC) program will prepare students to take advantage of a variety of cybersecurity career opportunities. The program draws from the fields of computing, information technology, information assurance, and information security. Based on widely accepted cybersecurity curricular guides, the CTEC program provides students with the theoretical and conceptual knowledge essential to understanding the cybersecurity discipline as well opportunities to develop practical skills. Graduates enter the workforce as cybersecurity professionals ready to make a difference applying advanced skills to protect critical digital infrastructures and services.

Electrical Engineering

The ABET accredited B.S. in Electrical Engineering program has a strong tradition of excellence and success. Laboratory training and design experience are strongly emphasized throughout the program, which translates into strong demand for our graduates from industries throughout the nation.

Electrical Engineering with Specialization in Medical Devices

Students in the Electrical Engineering program can pursue a specialization in Medical Devices by taking technical electives from an approved list of courses.

Electrical Engineering with Specialization in Power and Energy Engineering

Students in the Electrical Engineering program can pursue a specialization in Power and Energy Engineering by taking technical electives from an approved list of courses.

Electrical Engineering Technology

The Electrical Engineering Technology program (offered both on-campus and on-line) is accredited by the Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission of ABET. The Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology degree provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to pursue a wide variety of career options. Students receive training in the high-demand technical fields of computer systems, microelectronics, communications systems and electric power distribution.

Industrial Management and Applied Engineering

The Industrial Management and Applied Engineering program (offered on-campus, off-campus on military and community college locations, and on-line) is accredited by the Association of Technology, Management and Applied Engineering (ATMAE).  Students who pursue a degree in Industrial Management and Applied Engineering choose between an on-campus, traditional program; an off-campus program; and a laborer union program. Students are trained in six sigma, lean manufacturing, quality control, computer-aided manufacturing, industrial robotics, manufacturing processes, industrial safety, facilities planning, cost estimating and personnel supervision.

Information Technology

The Information Technology (ITEC) baccalaureate program (offered both on-campus and on-line) is designed to prepare students for careers in a wide variety of work settings that rely on information technologies to accomplish organizational goals. ITEC is a great fit for students who enjoy using computing technology to provide solutions to issues facing individuals, organizations, and societies. ITEC is distinct from computer engineering, computer science, and management information systems because it focuses on meeting the needs of users within organizational and societal contexts through the selection, creation, application, integration, and administration of computing technologies.

Mathematics

Mathematics is used in every aspect of Science and Engineering. The School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences offers the following undergraduate degrees in mathematics:

Mechanical Engineering

As the largest program in the College of Engineering, this ABET-accredited program offers a robust curriculum in mechanical systems, energy processes, and advanced materials. Students benefit from a collaborative learning environment and diverse research opportunities.

Mechanical Engineering with Specialization in Energy Engineering

Students in the Mechanical Engineering program can pursue a specialization in Energy Engineering by taking technical electives from an approved list of courses.

Mechanical Engineering with Specialization in Aerospace Engineering

Students in the Mechanical Engineering program can pursue a specialization in Aerospace Engineering by taking technical electives from an approved list of courses.

Mechanical Engineering with Specialization in Materials Science & Engineering

Students in the Mechanical Engineering program can pursue a specialization in Materials Science & Engineering by taking technical electives from an approved list of courses.

Statistics

The B.S.  degree in Statistics, offered by the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences, prepares students to pursue a career as statisticians.  Statistics are much needed in a wide variety of practical applications such as business analytics, industrial control, marketing, public policy, epidemiology, public health, demography, psychology, sociology, to mention only a few. Studies from several independent sources identify statistics as a critical area in which demand for skilled knowledge workers is expanding dramatically and quickly.

Technical Resource Management

The Technical Resource Management program is available in two convenient formats: online and on-campus. The program is designed to provide students with the 21st Century knowledge and skill sets to meet the in-demand employment needs of the American workforce. It builds upon educational and occupational experiences with courses selected to meet technical career objectives. The coursework is designed to develop foundational knowledge and insights for leading personnel in areas like quality control, labor-management relations, finance, business law, statistical analysis, and project management.

Biomedical Engineering

The Master of Science degree in Biomedical Engineering is available in thesis and non-thesis options and offers five areas of concentration: Bioinformatics & Computational Medicine, Modeling and Simulation of Biomedical Processes, Biomedical Imaging, Biomedical Instrumentation, and Biomechanics and Biomaterials.

Civil Engineering

The Civil and Environmental Engineering program is designed to provide advanced study in the areas of structural engineering, environmental engineering, geotechnical engineering, water resources engineering. Students may choose between completing a Master of Science (MS) degree in Civil Engineering (with thesis) or a Master of Engineering (ME) degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering (non-thesis option).

Computer Science

The MS degree in Computer Science is designed to provide students with relevant graduate-level education and to prepare them for careers as professional computer scientists or for advanced doctoral-level study.  Computer Science undergraduates may also pursue an accelerated one-year MS degree.  The program offers all of its students the opportunity and flexibility to participate in groundbreaking research and to collaborate with faculty and peers in many different areas. Our interdisciplinary approach to studying sets us apart from traditional, highly structured computer science programs. As such, our students gain a strong foundation in computer science while preparing themselves to use their degree to solve real-world challenges.

Cybersecurity and Cyber Systems

Cybersecurity is critical to the public and private sectors, to national security, and to maintaining our way of life. It’s a future-proof career with never-ending opportunity. The Master of Science (MS) in Cybersecurity and Cyber Systems from SIU is designed for those holding a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Information Technology, or equivalent. Coursework includes successful completion of three core competencies before selecting a focus of either Cybersecurity or Cyber Systems.

Electrical & Computer Engineering

The School of Electrical, Computer, and Biomedical Engineering offers the following degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering: (a) A Master of Engineering (ME) degree, designed to cater to the needs of both recent graduates and working professionals seeking to enhance their engineering expertise. The program emphasizes hands-on learning and practical applications; and (b) a Master of Science (MS) degree, designed for students who want to explore further the intricacies of electrical and computer engineering. The program features specialized tracks that allow students to tailor their studies to their specific interests and career goals.

Mathematics

The School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences offers a Master of Arts (MA) degree in Mathematics or a Master of Science (MS) degree in Mathematics. Tracks in Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Computational Mathematics, and Pure Mathematics are now available.

Mechanical Engineering

The Mechanical Engineering master's program is designed to provide advanced study in air pollution control, mass and heat transfer, coal conversion, electrochemical processes, thermal science, thermal systems design, solar systems design, chemical and biochemical processes, mechanical systems, computer-aided design, composite materials and ceramics and tribology. The department also offers an accelerated MS in Mechanical Engineering.

Quality Engineering and Management

The objective of the Master of Science degree in Quality Engineering and Management is to develop quality and management professionals who can plan, coordinate, design, implement, and control the quality function in manufacturing and service companies in order to increase productivity, optimize resources, decrease waste, and improve product quality. Course offerings and research are available in the areas of quality assurance, six sigma, lean manufacturing, project management and reliability. This technically-oriented non-engineering program provides advanced education for students with baccalaureate degrees in technology and is also an excellent continuing education opportunity for individuals who wish to expand their education in the area of quality management systems.

Computer Science

The Computer Science program offers a graduate program leading to the Doctor of Philosophy degree with a major in Computer Science through the Graduate School. The Computer Sciences Ph.D. program prepares a student to undertake independent research in either an academic or non-academic setting. The program is structured around the Ph.D. thesis; course and seminar work are designed with the requisite quality of the thesis in mind. A criterion for the thesis is that it be publishable in a recognized journal.

Electrical & Computer Engineering

The Ph.D. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering allows for a flexible course of study that can be tailored to each student's academic and professional goals. Study areas include: Biomedical Engineering, Communications, Computer Engineering, Control Systems, Nanoscale and Quantum Electronics, Electromagnetics, VLSI, Networks, Optics and Photonics, Power Systems, and Signal Processing. Graduates enjoy excellent employment opportunities and are recruited worldwide in industry, government, and academia.

Engineering Science

The Doctor of Philosophy degree in Engineering Science is offered for concentrations that correlate with four of our engineering programs: Civil and Environmental Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Industrial and Quality Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering and Energy Processes.

Mathematics

The School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences offers a Ph.D. degree in Mathematics. Tracks in Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Computational Mathematics, and Pure Mathematics are now available.

Mechanical Engineering
