About MAME


Mechanical, Aerospace, and Materials Engineering has multiple faculty members from different backgrounds: biomedical, chemical, thermal and fluid science, mechanical,  and materials engineering.  The school now has 15 faculty members, including the program directors, and directors of The Center for Advanced Friction Studies, Materials Technology Center, and the Coal Research Center.  This allows the program to have elective courses from these disciplines resulting in five distinct thrust areas, unique to the program. These thrust areas which are based on the electives taken by the students include:

  3. Thermal and Fluid Science/ Engineering
  4. Materials Science/ Engineering
  5. Mechanical Design and Systems

Mechanical, Aerospace, and Materials Engineering Faculty

When you arrive in Mechanical, Aerospace, and Materials Engineering you are not alone – one of our internationally recognized faculty members is assigned to each new student to provide mentoring and guidance during your undergraduate studies. Each of our professors has a Ph.D., in Engineering, with many receiving their degrees from major U.S. universities.

The strength of our undergraduate and graduate program comes from the diversity of our faculty’s expertise and their research programs.  The doctorates our faculty earned range from Mechanical Engineering to Chemical Engineering, Metallurgy, Material Science, and associated areas.  This wide spectrum of expertise allows students to learn from professors who teach classes related to their area of expertise and research.

With a few exceptions, your classes are taught by faculty and not graduate students. This gives you the opportunity to interact directly with some of the top researchers in the nation who are actively involved in a wide range of subjects.  Our research involves topics that include:

  • energy from coal and alternative fuels
  • chemical processes
  • biomechanical devices
  • nano- and friction-materials
  • friction properties
  • mechanical systems
  • advanced composites and their properties
  • thermal systems and heat transfer
  • computational fluid mechanics, and computational methods and systems

In the past five years, faculty in our school have received more than $4.5 million in research grants. These grants provide funding for research but also finance support for graduate students and undergraduate research assistants.

Recent inventions in the area of biomedical devices and advanced composite materials have potential to revolutionize industry.  Researchers are also looking at hydrogen from coal, synthetic fuels and bio-fuels.
