Association will honor three Distinguished Alumni - Gene Green
The Southern Illinois University Alumni Association will honor three prominent graduates as SIU Distinguished Alumni during Homecoming festivities next month.

Student one of three in nation to win award - University Communications
A student from SIU Carbondale has received an award for his achievements in nondestructive testing and engineering. Caleb McGee, a senior in mechanical engineering in the College of Engineering at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, won the 2012 Engineering Undergraduate Award from the American Society for Nondestructive Testing. McGee is one of just three students nationwide to achieve this recognition. McGee received the award for his knowledge of practices, problems, challenges and other aspects of the nondestructive testing industry, gained through his work with SIU Carbondale experts and facilities

CARBONDALE — Eighth-grader Katie Forer of Carbondale found more challenge than she expected at an SIU Carbondale summer camp. And she loved it. Forer is one of about 26 students in the Girls in Engineering and Science Day Camp that lasts through today. Industrial and STEM Partnership Creates Engineering Student Leaders
Bruce DeRuntz, PhD, Rhonda Kowalchuk, PhD and John Nicklow, PhD from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale describe an innovatie program for transitions community college graduate to bachelor degree graduates in engineering and engineering technology in 2 1/2 years. This paper is included in the Conference Proceedings for the ASQ 2012 Advancing the STEM Agenda Conference at UW-Stout July 16-17, 2012. Abstract provided by the authors: Students, universities and industry are all struggling during these economically challenging times. Students face rising tuition costs, universities face a reduction of state funding, and industry has a looming shortage of future technical leaders. Developing industrial and government partnerships to support the development of America’s future technical leaders has become imperative. The Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s (SIUC) Leadership Development Program (LDP) meets many of these pressing problems.

SIUE Engineers Without Borders Recognized - Illinois Ag Connection
When Hurricane Mitch pummeled Pimienta, Honduras in 1998, it destroyed a bridge that was a vital artery for transportation in and out of the small community. Until last summer, Pimienta residents traveled without the convenience of the bridge. Thanks to the multidisciplinary efforts of the Southern Illinois University

USA Today names three to all-academic team - Andrea Hahn
CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Three Southern Illinois University Carbondale students are among just 60 nationwide named to the annual USA Today All-USA College Academic Team. Lee Stewart (Dowell), a political science major, and Jessica Stout (Taylorville), a physiology major, each have a place on the "First Team" as defined by USA Today, and Jordan Kabat (Waltonville), a 2011 mechanical engineering graduate, is on the third team. All three are University Honors students and Presidential Scholars. "This is one of the most prestigious academic honors in the country, and we are extremely proud of Lee, Jessica and Jordan," Chancellor Rita Cheng said. "They are in the company of students from other distinguished universities, including Rice, Cornell, the Naval Academy, Northwestern and the University of California at Berkeley. But it is important to point out that ours is the only university with two students on the First Team."

Student team's project earns EPA accolades - By Tim Crosby
CARBONDALE, ILL. -- An interdisciplinary team of students at Southern Illinois University Carbondale is among the winners of a government-sponsored competition aimed at finding better, more sustainable ways to promote quality of life for humans while protecting the environment. The students, led by Manoj Mohanty, professor of mining and mineral resources engineering in the College of Engineering, was one of just 15 teams out of 45 proposals nationwide to advance to the second and final phase of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's "P3" competition.

SIU team competes in NASA competition - SCOTT FITZGERALD
CARBONDALE — A yearlong project for SIU engineering students will be put to the test this weekend in Huntsville, Ala., the site of the 19th annual Great Moonbuggy Race at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center. Nine students depart SIU today with Professor Tsuchin Philip Chu of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Energy Processes with their recently built, human-propelled moonbuggy.

Special events mark National Engineers Week - Tim Crosby
CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Faculty and future engineers at Southern Illinois University Carbondale this week will recognize top scholars and open the world of engineering to young people as they celebrate National Engineers Week. More than 400 high school students will visit the College of Engineering starting Wednesday, Feb. 22. The visitors will get a taste of what engineering is all about, organizers said, as well as have a chance to solve some engineering problems while they are here.

Association awards $15,000 in textbooks, supplies
CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Thirty-five Southern Illinois University Carbondale students received more than $15,000 in textbooks and supplies from the SIU Alumni Association earlier this week. The awards came during ceremonies Tuesday, Jan. 17, in the Student Center Ballrooms. “The generosity of our alumni makes these awards possible,” Chancellor Rita Cheng said. “Many of them benefitted from much-needed assistance during their time as students. We hope that when these recipients have the opportunity, they too will support the students who follow in their footsteps.”

Project benefits engineering students, Caterpillar - Tim Crosby
CARBONDALE, Ill. -- A group of engineering students from Southern Illinois University Carbondale is helping a major heavy equipment manufacturer improve its factory floor layout. The students, who are members of the Leadership Development Program at SIU Carbondale, worked with Caterpillar Inc. on its factory in Corinth, Miss. Advance Technology Services, the company that is responsible for maintenance and operations at the plant, sponsored the project. Dick Blaudow, an SIU Carbondale engineering alumnus who, along with his wife, Brigitte, founded the Leadership Development Program at the University, heads ATS.
