Civil, Environmental, and Infrastructural Engineering

The faculty in SIU Carbondale’s Department of Civil, Environmental, and Infrastructural Engineering have expertise in structural engineering, environmental engineering, water resources engineering and geotechnical engineering. Specific areas of research include:

  • Non-linear structural analysis
  • Structural earthquake engineering
  • Neural network in structural systems
  • Bio-energy production
  • Implications and applications of engineered nanoparticles in the environment
  • Stream restoration
  • Groundwater flow, contaminant transport, and remediation
  • Drinking water quality
  • Soil liquefaction

Research projects are funded by federal and state agencies including the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Department of Energy (DOE), the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the National Institutes of Water Resources, the Illinois Clean Coal Institute, the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Development, the Nature Conservancy, and the Illinois Groundwater Consortium.
