Pringle shoots for the stars
Zach Pringle certainly has his head in the stars.
Pringle, who graduated from SIU this spring with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, hopes to use his experiences and education to forge a career in aerospace.
His love for space and flight, in general, has always been with him. But his involvement with the College of Engineering’s “moonbuggy” team polished that desire to an even higher sheen.

Alumni Spotlight: Jeffery Ball
When it comes to going the extra mile and dedication to his alma mater, it’s hard to beat Jeffery T. Ball.
As an undergraduate engineering major at SIU in late 1980s, Ball had the good fortune of living on the same residence hall floor as the Saluki men’s basketball team. When it came time to buy season tickets for the 1988 season, Ball wanted to be sure he had good seats to see his buddies play.

Figuring out what degree they want and how best to pursue it can mean poring over catalogs and syllabi, while holding down a full load of classes in the meantime.

New faculty member is feeling the vibes
Tan Chai is feeling the good vibes.
The newest member of the team in the College of Engineering, the assistant professor of mechanical engineering and energy processes focuses on vibration and system dynamics in mechanical systems. She studies issues such as improving noise and vibration and isolation devices used widely in automotive applications in vehicle suspension and engine mount assemblies. One of her current research projects tackles the difficult job of modeling such systems.

The SIU Alumni Association has awarded 49 students with more than $20,000 worth of textbooks for the spring semester.

Concrete Canoe Team rows to nationals
The Concrete Canoe Team, sponsored by the SIU chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers, won its regional competition last weekend at the University of Kansas, and will move on to the national competition for the first time in the 20-year history of the team.
