ECTM received approvals of new academic programs

The College of Engineering, Computing, Technology, and Mathematics at Southern Illinois University Carbondale received an approval for two new programs: 1) BS in Cybersecurity technology and 2) BS in Statistics.

SIU engineering students make it easier for people with disabilities to enjoy nature

SIU engineering students make it easier for people with disabilities to enjoy nature A team of engineering students from Southern Illinois University Carbondale recently came together to assist people with mobility difficulties who struggle with getting out into nature, where hiking trails and off-road paths can present challenges. For their required senior capstone project, the mechanical engineering students designed and built a custom adaptive mobility device. Essentially a hiking cart, the device will allow people with disabilities to use the trails at Touch of Nature Outdoor Education Center with the assistance of a hiking partner. The item is now being used for TON programs and soon will be available to the public for use there.

Family honors longtime director, professor with $500K gift

TECHNICAL SERVICE CENTER NAMING HONOR MISSAVAGE’S LEGACY Roger J. Missavage, a longtime professor at Southern Illinois University, was an outstanding faculty of the College of Engineering. He was director of the Computer Assisted Instruction & Research Laboratory for 29 years. When Roger passed away in November 2021 at age 71, his brother Dennis Missavage, and sister and brother-in-law, Arlene and Gene Liss, established the Roger J. Missavage Endowed Fund for Engineering Education with a $500,000 gift in Roger’s memory.

SIU prof gets prestigious National Science Foundation grant to enhance AI crime analysis

Ahmed Imteaj, assistant professor in the School of Computing, received a $167,500 grant from the National Science Foundation. The program, known as CRII, is aimed at providing essential resources for early-career researchers.

SIU researcher leads $1.13M project to integrate AI into 6G technology

Gayan Aruma Baduge, associate professor in the School of Electrical, Computer and Biomedical Engineering, is leading an international team of researchers working with a total of $1.13 million in grant money. The three-year project is aimed at investigating AI-assisted integrated sensing and communications for 6G technology.

SIU engineering student among 10 ‘New Faces’ in her field in the U.S.

Morgan Klover, a senior in civil engineering from Decatur, Illinois, sits on one of the concrete canoes made by students at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Klover has been named one of the New Faces of Civil Engineering-College by the American Society of Civil Engineering.
