The College of Engineering, Computing, Technology, and Mathematics at Southern Illinois University Carbondale received an approval for two new programs: 1) BS in Cybersecurity technology and 2) BS in Statistics.

SIU's student cybersecurity team claims Illinois state title

The Southern Illinois University Carbondale Security Dawgs clinched the top spot at the Illinois State Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition on Feb. 17, placing first among eight schools vying for the top position. The team, a registered student organization, bested teams including those from the Illinois Institute of Technology, Lewis University, Governors State University, DePaul University, Loyola University Chicago and others to secure the top prize. The achievement highlights the strength of SIU’s new cybersecurity technology program that will start in fall 2024, and also sets a high standard for future competitions, said Chun-Hsi "Vincent" Huang, director of the School of Computing.

The School of Computing's Computer Science Degree Program at SIU proudly celebrates the academic excellence of Bhargav Krishna Thota, a Ph.D. student who has been awarded the Best Student Paper Award at the internationally acclaimed IEEE/ACM International Conference on Advances in Social Networks Analysis and Mining (ASONAM) 2023. Recognized as one of the top conferences in social networking, ASONAM has recently been distinguished by inclusion in the CORE rankings, signifying its prominence in the global research community.

SIU prof explores how to use AI to prevent and fight crime

Ahmed Imteaj, assistant professor in the School of Computing, in January will start work on a project titled “Education and Workforce Training for Artificial Intelligence in Criminal Activity Recognition: Computing and Criminology Perspectives.” The one-year project is funded with a nearly $100,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security under its Criminal Investigations and Network Analysis Center program.

SIU prof gets $588K grant to shrink AI’s carbon footprint

Big data and big AI need big power to operate. That’s why a researcher at Southern Illinois University Carbondale is studying ways to make this growing tech sector greener. Iraklis Anagnostopoulos, an associate professor in the School of Electrical, Computer and Biomedical Engineering, recently received a three-year, $588,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to study substantially improving the sustainability of modern edge data centers by mitigating the environmental impact of AI and boosting the efficiency of data processing.
