Center for Advanced Friction Studies
The College of Engineering is home to the Center for Advanced Friction Studies (CAFS). The center focuses on industry sponsored research in the areas of carbon composites, polymer composites, thermal effects, wet friction and non-destructive evaluations of brakes.
The mission of CAFS is:
- The pursuit of knowledge in friction and the education and training of undergraduate and graduate students in subject areas of interest to the friction industry and the state of Illinois (teaching through performing research).
- To offer a creative environment allowing an active participation of faculty, students, and industrial affiliates.
The Center's Industrial Advisory Board is currently comprised of the Boeing Company, Honeywell, Link Engineering, Meggitt Aircraft Braking Systems Corporation, Airstar, and Tribo Inc. In addition, the Center works with other industrial companies in performing non-core studies.
